SUP YOGA

What is SUP YOGA?

Standup paddleboarding is quickly becoming the water sport of choice and while SUP might not be the most popular (yet) it certainly is the fastest growing. Known as Hoe he’e nalu, Standup paddle boarding has its roots where all board sports have their beginnings, in Hawaii. The most obvious benefits of SUP’ing are increased balance, strengthening the core muscles, and all major muscle groups (see diagram) you’re using your legs and core to stay balanced and strong, arms to paddle and core to stay upright and twist and is great for increasing fitness and even weight loss

It is exactly as it sounds, a yoga practice, whilst balancing on a paddleboard on the water. Yoga alone can provide amazing strengthening, flexibility and balance benefits, let alone standing on and unstable surface on the water. The benefits are increased sunstantially and dramatically and above all, it’s ridiculously good fun.

Do I need to be a proficient paddler?

SUP Yoga is the newest summer sport trend and depending on the conditions and the location no experience of either SUP or Yoga is necessary to try it, only a willingness to try and the ability to swim. The main advice for beginners? Don’t be afraid to fall. “The quicker you become okay with falling into the water, the better you’ll feel and the easier it will be.

Indoor classes are available to complete beginners, both for yoga and paddle boarding but in the warmer months when we take our classes outside into the open, you will be required to attend a taster session with Mid Cheshire SUP to assess your readiness to paddle outto location.

If you are an experienced paddler then SUP Yoga is the perfect tool to help increase your balance, confidence and stability. This will aid realignment and grounding for you to better handle challenging waters and advanced turns and monouvres on your board.
