One to One Yoga

One to one yoga teaching is the optimal way to adapt yoga to the individual student. It is the traditional way of teaching yoga and allows for holistic and therapeutic applications to be fully explored.

Group yoga classes are a very recent concept and a good one at that: They are a good way to discover yoga, and they have allowed yoga to be brought into many people’s lives across the globe. They are, however, very limited when it comes to adapting the teaching to each individual student’s needs. Traditionally, Yoga was only ever taught on a one to one basis, and for good reason.

Private yoga classes are a wonderful way to really make sure that your individual needs are being met in your yoga practice. Allowing yourself that moment in your week to truly connect with the deepest aspects of you.

One to ones are perfect for those of you who:

  • are working to build strength in any particular area or help heal from injury

  • are in recovery from illness or are undergoing treatment at home.

  • are self-conscious about practicing in front of other people

  • want to build a basic foundation before joining a group class

  • experience depression, M.E, M.S. body image issues, a disability, PTSD, in recovery from addiction, burnout, cancer recovery, or something else that requires closer attention to detail than the group class can offer

  • have a busy schedule and find it difficult to get to a scheduled group class

  • are nervous about jumping in at the deep end and would prefer a gentle more personal introduction to yoga

  • need support with anxiety control

  • want to work more intensely and dynamically on your practice with one-to-one attention to detail

  • have larger bodies or frailer bodies

  • who just fancy a treat

What can be achieved from one-to-one yoga classes?

  • Start on the path of your personal yoga practice that you can continue to explore safely.

  • A better understanding of and deep connection to your breath

  • Personalise your yoga practice according to your individual needs

  • Explore different areas of yoga practice including postures, meditation, breathing exercises, chanting

  • Understand and heal deep emotional conflicts, and address any issues to do with your physical, mental, or emotional health.

  • Clearer goals and the motivation to achieve them

  • Understand a little more about the philosophy and science of yoga

What changes can I expect?

Though there is no magic pill and no guarantees, some of the many benefits you can expect to experience include:

  • General feeling of wellness and the inclination to make healthier lifestyle choices.

  • Improved self-esteem, self-assurance and self-acceptance.

  • Reduced anxiety, better sleep, improved focus, and improved mood.

  • Improved digestion and elimination

  • Improved respiration, circulation

  • Increased strength, flexibility and endurance.

How can a one to one class help me?

Your practice will be designed to help you reach a goal. Here are a just a few reasons why people practise yoga:

  • To improve or maintain their physical, emotional or mental health.

  • To recover from or learn to live with a health problem.

  • To improve their self-confidence and their relationships with others.

  • To gain greater concentration skills and increase vitality for work or study.

  • To improve performance in a particular sport: Yoga can be used as a mental or physical preparation, a way to strengthen a particular part of the body, or relieve over-strained muscles.

  • To calm anxious nerves before an event, performance or challenging situation.

  • To relieve insomnia

  • To heal an emotional wound, or resolve an emotional conflict.

What happens during a one to one class?

A one to one class is a private meeting between you and the teacher. There is no rule as to what will happen and in what order that depends on your needs. The first session will involve a consultation to allow me to get to know you and to understand your aims, needs and abilities.

We will begin by getting to grips with a few basic postures to allow me to assess your current posture and movement patterns. From here we will develop together organically to build a programme best suited to your abilities and aims.

What is involved in a consultation?

For the consultation we will explore your past, including any physical trauma, accidents, injuries, medical history, look at your current lifestyle, including diet and exercise regime, work life, stress responses and sleep patterns. We will take a look at your current range of motion, decipher your strengths and areas that require attention and establish your goals. Once we have a good picture of the past and present, we can work out a safe, beneficial programme to get you moving safely on your yoga journey.

What kind of practice will I be given?

The practice is tailored to your needs, it takes into consideration the following factors:

  • The amount of time you have available each day

  • The time of day you will be practising

  • What you want to achieve through your practice.

  • Your abilities

  • Your difficulties and blockages (both mentally and physically)

The practice may include different kinds of exercises, chosen according to your needs and abilities. These may range from postures and breathing exercises to meditation or chanting, or other more unusual tools. You may also be advised to change something in your diet, or lifestyle. I will always make sure you are comfortable about carrying out what he has asked you to do, if you are not, he will find an alternative for you.

How much experience in yoga should I have before taking a one to one class?

During our time together, I will construct a practice suitable for your abilities, so whether you are a complete beginner, or you were born on a yoga mat, this way of teaching will adapt itself to you.

How often will I need to book?

That will depend on your own personal progress and your reason for choosing this method in the first place. Some people only ever take one class, and don’t ever feel the need to change their practice. Others like to come back once every few weeks or months to adapt their practice to their changing needs and goals, or to move on to something more difficult once they have made some progress.

You do not need to come to a class every time you want to practise, I will design a practice for you that you can repeat independently at home as often as you wish.

I would however, recommend a minimum of 2 classes, one to cover a consultation and basic principles and then a second to establish your connection to the basic postures and to ensure safe practise. From here, you can continue your journey on your mat at home or join a group class.

How much will it cost?

Your first session will last for 1.5 hours to include an initial consultation. Investment is £45

Each session thereafter will be 1 hour at a cost of £35, you can book an extended session of 1.5 hours for £45 (this is ideal if you wish to focus extra time of breath work and relaxation

.

There are many other ways in which yoga helps people on a daily basis, or to get through a difficult period. If you are not sure whether it could provide a solution to your problem, or help you reach your goal, you can send us an email, or call to discuss your needs.

If you don’t have a particular problem or goal, yoga can simply be a great way to start the day with an energetic practice, or to wind down in the evening with a more relaxing session. It is also a way to maintain your general health, and stay in touch with yourself.
